[November 21, 2023] Europe's automotive giant, Stellantis Group, has announced a significant strategic collaboration with CATL, a leading Chinese battery manufacturer. They have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to supply innovative Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery technology for the European electric vehicle market.
This MoU underscores a joint commitment to develop an advanced technology roadmap and explore opportunities in the future battery value chain, propelling the EV industry forward.
To support Stellantis Group's electrification strategy and long-term goals, both parties are considering establishing a joint venture to strengthen their cooperation.
Carlos Tavares, the Global CEO of Stellantis Group, stated: "The MoU with CATL for LFP battery technology is a significant step in our strategy to uphold the freedom of movement for the European middle class. As a leader in the battery sector, CATL will collaborate with our various iconic auto brands to provide customers with innovative, user-friendly, and scalable battery technology, aiding us in achieving our net-zero carbon emission target by 2038."
LFP batteries are renowned for their long lifespan and high thermal stability, playing a crucial role in providing high-quality, durable, and affordable EVs. Stellantis's range includes B to C class sedans, crossovers, and SUVs.
As part of Stellantis Group's "Dare Forward 2030" strategic plan, electrification remains a key focus. By 2030, all passenger vehicles sold by the group in Europe will be fully electric, and 50% of the passenger cars and light trucks sold in the USA will be electric. To achieve this vision, Stellantis is forming a series of partnerships to ensure a stable and low-carbon supply of critical raw materials in its electrification journey.
