UPS battery is an uninterruptible power supply/source that provides a short-term backup or emergence power when power fails or surges. However, its primary function is to serve as a stopgap system between the main and backup power. This is because it can respond instantly when power surges before the backup power pick up, as it can take several minutes to respond. Thence is mostly used to power hospital equipment and CCTV during critical and emergency operations. Nonetheless, it is also crucial in powering computers, telecommunication equipment, banks, and data centers to protect the hardware.

It is worth noting that a UPS battery is not backup power because it can last for a few minutes. Despite providing short-term power, it can also correct and stabilize power problems caused by overvoltage or voltage surge. Therefore, it would be significant to have a backup system to provide a sustaining load to handle your devices before the UPS battery dies. With that in mind, there are three main types of UPS batteries:

1. Standby UPS

This type of UPS battery is commonly used to provide surge protection and power backup by connecting it directly to the incoming power utility. Standby UPS is ideal for homes and a less demanding professional environment like PC. When it detects a power outage, the internal storage battery turns on its internal DC-AC inverter circuitry then connects to its DC-AC inverter. The switchover may be instantly, or after a few seconds depending on the time standby UPS unit takes to detect the lost utility voltage.

2. Online UPS

An online UPS employs either delta conversion or double technology by always connecting the batteries to the inverter. Hence, it can maintain consistent current flow during a power outage because the double conversion technology automatically rectifies and seamlessly bypasses fluctuation. When there is a power outage, the rectifier drops out of the circuit, and the power will be sourced from the UPS battery. Online UPS costs much more due to its capability to run continuously, improved cooling system, static transfer switch that makes it reliable, and battery charger/rectifier with much greater AC-DC current. A double-conversion UPS battery is ideal for equipment sensitive to power fluctuations and environments where power sags or outages are frequent.

3. Line Interactive UPS

This type of UPS similarly works to Standby UPS, but it can automatically regulate voltage by featuring a multi-tap variable-voltage autotransformer. The autotransformer regulates output voltage can either respond by adding or subtracting the powered coil to increase or decrease the magnetic field. This allows the Line-Interactive UPS to continuously tolerate high and low voltage without battery drainage and continue charging throughout operations. This type of UPS is much more advanced than Standby UPS, making it expensive but affordable compared to Online UPS. With this battery, you can safely shut down your sensitive device and safeguard them during brownouts and blackouts.

Conclusion

From the above review, it would be helpful to compare the types of UPS batteries to help you choose the one that is reliable to your needs. Because every moment counts when handling your operation and safeguarding your hardware and devices. However, when sifting through for UPS battery, you must ensure the VA rating is compatible with the total load you intend to protect.
